Common questions about passing.
Why did my car fail the smog check?
The most common reasons are an illuminated check engine light, incomplete readiness monitors, a worn catalytic converter, or tampered emissions equipment. We’ll show you the results so you know what to fix.
What are readiness monitors?
On-board self-tests your car runs as you drive. If you recently disconnected the battery or cleared codes, they may be ‘not ready’ – drive normally for a few days first.
Will clearing the check engine light help me pass?
No – clearing codes resets the readiness monitors, which itself causes a fail until they complete. Fix the underlying issue instead.
How can I improve my chances of passing?
Drive 15-20 minutes first so the engine and catalytic converter are hot, make sure the check engine light is off, and confirm the readiness monitors are complete.
Does a recent oil change help?
It can – dirty, contaminated oil releases extra hydrocarbons that can raise your readings. A fresh oil change before testing is a cheap edge.
How soon can I retest after repairs?
As soon as the repair is done and the readiness monitors are complete. Bring it back and we’ll retest.
What if I can’t afford the repairs?
California’s Bureau of Automotive Repair runs a Consumer Assistance Program that may help eligible owners with repair costs or vehicle retirement. Ask us or check the BAR website.
Does a failed test stay on record?
Yes – results are reported to the state, which is why we recommend fixing known issues before you test rather than after a fail.
